When Google+ launched in June 2011, it was considered by some to be the best challenger to compete with Facebook. Other opinions were that it was too complex when it came to the mandatory integration with other Google services such as Picasa. Fast forward to December 2012. Google+ is now the second largest social network, with 343 million active users, only behind Facebook.
The data showing that Google+ has risen through the ranks comes from GlobalWebIndex. The data comes as no surprise to me, and probably not to most of the readers of our site. I personally find that Google+ usually has more interesting conversations, and is largely used by those who cannot stand the drama of Facebook and who want more than 180 characters to share their views. The graph below shows just how meteoric Google+’s climb is.
The emergence of YouTube in the third spot shows the real opportunity that Google has to take a stranglehold to social media. I think it will be a while before we see anyone else other than Facebook at the top of the pile, but now Google+ can solely focus on the target on the back of Facebook. With the improvements made to the web interface and the significant overhaul made to the Android app, Google is certainly setting itself up for success with Google+
We love social media as much as anyone, so don’t forget to check out our own Google+ page, hit us up on Twitter and of course you can always get us on Facebook. Links right below!
