If you’ve ever used a Google TV set-top box, you know just how awesome it is. Live TV mixed with a custom-built Android desktop, running apps while simultaneously giving you the ability to watch cat videos on YouTube and that great new sitcom you just can’t get away from. If you have a Google TV you also know how these devices can sometimes be underpowered and unsupported after release. Huawei looks to be addressing the power option in this equation by creating a new custom quad-core processor for their newest Google TV set-top box, the Huawei MediaQ M310. Here’s the exact specification list:
SoC – HiSilicon K3V2 quad-core Cortex A9 processor with Vivante GC4000 GPU
System Memory – 1 GB RAM
Storage – 4 GB flash + microSD slot
Video I/O – HDMI out and HDMI in
Audio I/O – 1x SPDIF, 3.5 mm stereo jack and mic (3-in-1)
USB – 2x USB 2.0 host ports
Connectivity – Wi-Fi 802.11n & Bluetooth 4.0
Huawei multi-screen (Pushing, mirroring)
Content aggregation / Voice Search
The Huawei MediaQ M310 is a fully-featured Android-based media player that interfaces with your current TV set-top box to provide more functions than you might already have. HDMI input and output along with the “Huawei multi-screen” feature will likely give you the option to use your phone along side your Google TV, so you can be pushing YouTube videos you found on your phone straight to your TV for everyone to see in crystal-clear HD. The best part about this lovely little set-top box is that it’s only going to be retailing for $70 or $80, and considering the price of other less-powerful Google TV sets on the market, that’s defintely a steal.
<h5 “>Huawei’s custom made-for-TV interface
While the custom made-for-TV interface does definitely look a bit ugly, here’s hoping that the Android version they are basing it off of is Jelly Bean; either 4.1 or 4.2 would be fine with me. Those looking for a little more horsepower will find themselves wanting the Huawei MediaQ M810, which features the same quad-core processor, but with slightly more beefed up specs:
2GB RAM
8GB internal flash memory
2x Gigabit Ethernet
DVB Digital TV Receiver
2x 3.5″ HDD bays
Those guessing about those HDD bays can expect DVR-like functionality and media-server content storage on their little box right in their living room. No more having to move your photos and videos to a million different hard drives, and then trying to remember where you put them! Like the MediaQ M810 will retail for a little higher given the spec boost, but there’s no official pricing for that. Expect an official release date at the upcoming MWC 2013 at the end of next month.
